Looking Back on the Year on the Bands

As the year draws to a close, it feels like the right time to pause, look back, and reflect on another chapter of radio adventures.

Like many of us in the hobby, this year has been a mix of great propagation days, frustrating band conditions, technical challenges, learning moments, and those rewarding contacts that remind us why amateur radio never gets old.

HF, DX, and Propagation

HF once again proved why it remains my favourite part of the hobby. With solar conditions continuing to keep things interesting, there were periods where the higher bands really came alive. 15 and 10 metres in particular delivered some excellent DX, with strong signals and enjoyable SSB conditions when the sun cooperated.

Europe continues to be a favourite direction to work, but it was great to also log solid contacts into South America and Africa, often with surprisingly strong signals. Keeping an eye on the sunspot numbers paid off, but as always, some of the best contacts came from simply calling CQ and seeing who answered.

Station Improvements and Tweaks

No year in amateur radio is complete without some time spent refining the station. From antenna optimisation to SDR and audio adjustments, there’s always something to improve or experiment with.

Spending time dialing in clean, articulate SSB audio—while keeping bandwidth sensible—has been well worth the effort. The combination of modern SDR flexibility and traditional HF operating continues to be a powerful and enjoyable mix.

There were also the usual technical hiccups along the way (because it wouldn’t be amateur radio without them), but each challenge was another opportunity to learn something new and improve the setup.

The Community Aspect

One of the best parts of amateur radio remains the people. Whether it’s a quick signal report exchange or a longer ragchew, the shared passion for radio connects us across borders, cultures, and time zones.

It’s always encouraging to hear familiar callsigns pop up again throughout the year, and just as rewarding to work a completely new station on the other side of the world.

Looking Ahead

As we head into the new year, there’s plenty to look forward to. With solar conditions continuing to evolve, the coming months should offer even more opportunities on the higher HF bands.

The goals remain simple:

  • Keep getting on the air regularly
  • Chase DX when conditions allow
  • Continue refining the station
  • Most importantly, enjoy the hobby

Thank you to everyone who took the time to answer a CQ, exchange reports, or stop for a chat. I appreciate every contact.

Wishing all fellow amateurs a safe, enjoyable, and radio-filled new year. I look forward to working you on the bands again soon.
